walk :: 07.01.09

It seems that I have begun to document my walks, or at least some of them.  It's more difficult to take photos of the ones where it is just Luna and me.  Or, maybe I just need to take longer walks.  I do know that I am making them more often.  I am ashamed of the fact that I haven't been exploring much at all as of late.

I'm remedying that situation.

Today, I was on my own and I walked around one of my favorite neighborhoods in Madison, just off Monroe Street, while X was at guitar lessons.  If I were a city girl, I'd like to live in this area ... there is nary a lawn in sight, a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired homes, and an unusually high level of coolness.

ambition schmambition

I am trying to be productive, per usual, and while I have now managed to post these photos ... they do, indeed, convey my general level of ambition.

Not much to say, except that these pictures are from a walk and you can see the rest of the photos HERE.

a study in routines :: morning

For years, I have been both obsessed with and comforted by routines.

The morning rituals are easier for me and tend to develop naturally ... pressing coffee, drinking it while looking at lovely-mundane images and words online, a walk through the gardens to see what happened overnight (some of the hollyhocks are taller than me already!), walking the dog about the yard and letting her taste some fresh greens (she likes young dandelion leaves; the peas, not so much), sitting on the porch, and then tidying inside what was left out from the previous evening.

It all eases me into the day, although I often want to stay in morning-routine mode ALL DAY.  It's so quiet and cool and serene and safe.  I need to work a bit on that transition into daytime, work time, and production.

I think that I'll touch on routines a bit here and there, especially as I work toward developing more soothing evening routines, which is in part inspired by Shanna Murray as well as necessity because I really need some gentle habits for the end of the day too.

yard journal :: 06.25.09

I did a bit of a video yard journal a few days ago, but I must warn you that it's rather long and boring despite only showing a bit of my gardens.

harold's book

I am so excited to have received a copy of Harold Kruse's third book, "Dear Editor: Opinions and Comments From a Farmer-Naturalist's Viewpoint Plus Other Sketches From Past and Present".

When he first began putting it together, I was a bit of an assistant by typing and printing his letters to the editor, doing the same with pages for the book, and with whatever else he needed help.  Harold also asked to use some of my photos.  There are other, more beautiful photos in the book, including some by his daughter, Gretchen, as well as Steve Meyer (www.stevesmeyer.com) and Mike Bailey (www.mhbailey.com).

In the past I have attempted to describe Harold -- how amazing, innovative, and important he is to the conservation of Wisconsin and land everywhere.  (Gretchen, if you see this, your dad needs a wiki!)

All that I can do is to suggest that you purchase this book and, if you're lucky, some of his past editions may also be available.  He does not have an online store, but you can read his local "birding by car" guide HERE, at The Nature Conservancy's website.  Additionally, you can view one of his more recent editorials HERE.

The following are places where you may be able to purchase this book, past editions, or lament over the fact that they might have all been sold and thus suggest that more copies be printed:

Baraboo Range Preservation Association

Free Congregation of Sauk County -- (Scroll down the page for information or click on "contact us".)

If you are visiting this site because of a recent newspaper article that mentions our family ... Hello!  Please feel free to wander around and if you're interested in contacting me, stop by the about page for email information.

new project, ongoing

I'm doing a little, local photo project ... nothing spectacular, yet fun.  It's called "the other side" and was named by my daughter, X.  You can view what I have so far HERE

weekend and a book

Today, I received a copy of a book (of environmentally-related local letters to the editor) that has some photos that I snapped in it.  I'll share that book later this week along with information about how to obtain a copy, if you would like.  (I do not benefit from the sale.  All proceeds go to a conservation group.)

It has been a quiet weekend, except for some thunder and booms from the Civil War re-enactment downtown.  (See note about daguerreotype below.)  Yesterday was X's birthday and we made vegan cookies 'n' cream cupcakes from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World.  Every recipe from that book that I have tried so far?  A grand success.

The top photo should be called ... humidity.  (<--- another humid photo there)

I found this little daguerreotype holder at a tag sale last week.  It is from 1855 and behind the newer (40s era photo) was a lovely daguerrotype of a mourning widow.  I originally intended to sell the frame, but feel protective of this young woman and her memory.

a vegan salad for the season

My taste buds were thinking about pasta e fagioli, but I was in the mood for something a little cooler.  I googled 'tomato' 'bean' 'salad' and ended up with THIS WINNER from the Martha Stewart website.

I think that it would be delicious chilled with pasta as well.

Of note, I doubled the garlic.

hello, mirror

X and I took a little walk today, after her volunteer work at the library.  I took photos for a possible picture project.

(This isn't one of them.)
