photo + dalai lama visit

I didn't get around to answering comments this last week.  I'm sorry about that.  I also removed a few posts while editing the site.  So, if you're looking for something in particular and it's not there, just let me know. 

We saw His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Sunday. 

I decided, at the last minute, not to bring my camera along with me.  It was bulky and I wasn't 100% sure that it would pass through security.  While waiting for the dialogue to begin, I received a comment from Shokoofeh (on my phone) that she was not permitted to bring in her DSLR when she saw His Holiness.  After reading that, I was quite relieved that I had left it at home. 

The governor gave an opening speech and then introduced the Madison Youth Choirs.  During their performance, His Holiness came out along with UW-Madison neuroscientist Richard J. Davidson (CIHM), moderator Daniel Goleman, and HHDL's interpretor.  Afterward, two of the children gave HHDL a University of Wisconsin Badgers hat, which he wore throughout the performance.  (You can see a newspaper photo HERE.)

The dialogue was very interesting.  Rather than recount it myself, I'll just point you to THIS newspaper article, if you're interested.  I didn't find a full transcript online, but I also didn't look very hard.  There are some great photos of his seventh visit to Madison on the Dalai Lama's website.

north, south, east, west

It was really windy here today. 

It has been extremely gusty in Wisconsin for more than a week, but not to this degree.  Visibility was down to four blocks in some areas of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac.  Just going to the grocery store left us covered in grit.  I think that I ingested quite a bit as well.  These shots are badly-taken, yet can see a bit of the dust.  For instance, the eagle on the water tower (west) should be visibly dark brown.  The camera and I can usually make out detail  much further than depicted in these photos, which are, respectively, looking north, south, east, and west. 

There is only a breeze now and the dust is gone... if I don't count my hair, eyes, or throat.

video + tidbits

I came upon this video while organizing my computer this last weekend.  I shot it after X and I had set up THIS SHOT for the project 'unmasked' out at the Mazomanie Sand and Oak Barrens. 

This is going to be a crazy-busy week.  There is so much to do in general, not to mention the preparations for the upcoming weekend.  (Note to self:  Call dog kennel to reserve boarding!)  I don't think that I'll fit in any photo shoots or hikes, but maybe a few pictures and a short walk or two.

pravina studio

It was time for a new bag. 

I have been NEEDING a new one for a while now.  I have several good purses that tend to stay out of rotation because no other bag has ever lived up to the Kenzie non-leather saddlebag purse.  I love that baby, but it is looking sad and bad.  I decided a while ago that my next purchase would be from Pravina Studio, a local maker of bags and accessories.  You can see her shop HERE. 

I have a thing for grey and I think that it works in all seasons.  I chose the ESEN bag, which is a perfect design for my needs.  The bag arrived today and it is amazing.  It is sturdy, yet flexible.  The interior pockets are just right.  The lining is lovely.  I am just so very delighted.  Thank you, Diana. 

Now, I'm going to transfer all my stuff from the Kenzie saddle bag to the Pravina ESEN.

head cheese :: straka meats

Okay, it is no secret that I am basically a vegan.  I wanted to get that out there right away lest anyone be confused by the photos above and the ingredient list at the bottom. 

I focus a lot on my Scandinavian lineage, but on my maternal side, I am German-Irish.  (Surnames = Grauvogl, Shanahan and Conley)  Today, I went to pick up a treat for Grandma ... head cheese. 

Ingredients:  Vinegar, pork broth, pork skin, beef heart, beef tongues, onions, sugar, salt, and spice.

in review: ice fishing

This last weekend we visited a close family friend and some other friends in the Wausau area.  It was timed so that we could attend an ice fishing tournament on Saturday.  I don't fish, although I really enjoyed it as a child. 

That stated, I absolutely adore the community and, as much as that, the literal and lovely assault of my senses by:  the roar of augers, snowmobiles, and four-wheelers; the passive-aggressive cold; the blinding sun; the crunch of snow; the rush of heat when entering a shanty; and the smell of wood stoves and grills.

still walking on top of the snow :: 27 january 10

It is still getting colder here.  We will be walking on top of the snow for a while instead of sinking into it.  That's my current excuse for putzing around outside.

It was snowing when I got up this morning, so Luna and I headed out to take toy lens photos right after breakfast.  It is nearly 12 hours later and still snowing. 

Bliss.

a balmy ten degrees, or negative ten with wind chill

Yesterday, I went down to the river for a while.  I knew that the ice was beginning to form.  It snaps and seems as though it is alive.  You can see and hear the air moving around between the ice and water in the thin spots.  I spent most of my time laying on the slick surface and taking photos.  Here are the ones taken from that position.  Home, sweet cold, home.

the capitola review
